Questions Worth Asking Before You Book Surgery Abroad
Twelve questions that change the answer, grouped by what they are really about: the surgeon, the plan, the money and what happens afterwards.
About the Person Operating
Who performs my operation, and can I have their name before I travel? Are they board certified in this specific field, and where? Will I meet them before the day of surgery, in person rather than on a video call?
These sound obvious and they are the ones most often left unanswered. A clinic that names the surgeon in writing before you book has made a commitment it can be held to.
About the Plan
How many days should I be in the country, and what decides that number? What happens on each of those days? Who decides when I am fit to fly, and is that check part of the plan or an extra?
The useful version of this question is: show me the week. If the answer is a date for the operation and silence around it, the rest has not been planned.
About What Could Change
What happens if the examination suggests a different procedure, or no procedure? Does the quote change, and do I see the new one before anything is booked? What if I decide not to go ahead after the consultation?
The answers reveal whether the consultation is a real decision point or a formality on the way to an operation that was already scheduled.
About Afterwards
Who do I contact when I am home, and is it the same person I spoke to before? Is aftercare written down or explained once? If a revision were medically necessary, what are the terms, and are they agreed before I book or discussed afterwards?
Aftercare is the part that is easiest to promise and hardest to verify. Ask for it in writing, and read what it actually commits anyone to.
The Question Behind All of Them
Every question above is a version of one question: is this clinic willing to be specific in writing before it has my money? You are not testing anyone's competence with these. You are testing whether the answers exist.
A clinic that finds these questions reasonable is the kind you want. One that finds them awkward has told you something without meaning to.
Not treatment advice. Every plan is decided by an examination, not by an article.
