How to Check a Surgeon's Credentials from the UK
You can verify more than most people realise before you travel. What to ask for, and what each answer is worth.
Start with a Full Name
Not the clinic, not the brand, not the coordinator. The surgeon's full name as it appears on their licence, and their specialty. Ask for it in writing, and ask when it was decided.
If a clinic will not give a name before payment, the name is not the only thing being withheld.
Ask Which Register They Appear On
Every country licenses its doctors somewhere. Ask which national register the surgeon is on, under what number, and how you can look them up yourself.
A surgeon practising in Turkey will not usually appear on a UK register, and that is expected rather than suspicious. What matters is that a register exists and that you can check it.
Specialty Is Not the Same as Membership
Membership of an association is a subscription. Board certification in a specialty is an examined qualification. Both may appear in the same paragraph of a website and they are not equivalent.
Ask which specialty the certification is in, and whether it covers the operation you are having.
The Hospital Is a Separate Check
Ask which hospital the operation takes place in, by name, and look it up independently. Accreditation belongs to the hospital rather than to the agency arranging your trip.
Surgeons sometimes visit a hospital rather than work there, and that is worth knowing.
What a Good Answer Looks Like
Specific, fast, and in writing. Names, numbers, a hospital, and a suggestion that you check for yourself.
Vagueness here is the single most useful warning sign available to you, and it costs nothing to test.
Not treatment advice. Every plan is decided by an examination, not by an article.
