Travel Insurance and Planned Surgery Abroad
Standard travel policies and planned surgery rarely fit together. What to check, and what the gap usually is.
Standard Policies Usually Exclude It
Most travel insurance is written for illness or accident while abroad, not for the consequences of an operation you travelled to have. That exclusion is normally explicit.
Read the wording rather than the summary page, and read it before you book anything.
Ask the Insurer the Specific Question
Not am I covered abroad, but am I covered for complications arising from elective surgery I have travelled for. Put it in writing and keep the answer.
The difference between those two questions is the entire policy.
Specialist Cover Exists
Some insurers write cover specifically for medical travel. It is a smaller market and the wording varies, so compare what is actually covered rather than the price.
Check whether repatriation is included and under what conditions.
What the Clinic Covers Is Not Insurance
A clinic's revision terms are a commercial agreement with that clinic. They are not the same as cover for treatment somewhere else, or for a flight home, or for time off work.
You may want both. They do different jobs.
The Unglamorous Items
Cancellation if you are advised not to travel. Extended stay if you are advised not to fly. Anything involving a companion. These are the clauses that get used most often.
Name them individually when you ask.
Not treatment advice. Every plan is decided by an examination, not by an article.
