Flying Home After Surgery: Who Clears You, and What They Check
The flight home is part of the medical plan rather than the end of it. What the final check looks at and why the last days are not optional.
The Check Exists for a Reason
A final examination before you fly is looking for the things that are easier to manage in the country you are still in. That is the whole logic of the last days of the trip.
Ask who performs that check, whether it is the surgeon, and what would make them advise you to stay.
Booking a Flexible Ticket
The cheapest ticket is the one that assumes nothing changes. If you are travelling for surgery, the possibility that you are advised to stay another day is real and it is not a failure.
Ask the clinic what they would recommend you book, and take the answer seriously even if it costs more.
Moving on the Plane
Ask what you should do during the flight, what you should have with you in the cabin rather than in the hold, and what would count as a reason to seek help on arrival.
Get that in writing. You will not remember a verbal instruction well at the end of a long day.
Who Meets You
Arrange the arrival end before you leave. Someone at the airport, and a plan for the first night. This is ordinary planning and it is the part people postpone.
If you are travelling alone, say so in the consultation. It changes the advice rather than the price.
If You Are Told Not to Fly Yet
Ask now what that would cost and who arranges it: extra hotel nights, a changed flight, a longer stay in hospital. Knowing the answer removes the pressure to argue with medical advice at the worst possible moment.
