Revision Surgery Abroad: Who Is Responsible

The uncomfortable conversation is easiest before surgery. What revision terms should cover, and what they usually do not.

Revision Is Not the Same as Dissatisfaction

A medically indicated revision and an outcome you are unhappy with are different situations, and clinics treat them differently. Terms that blur the two are terms that will disappoint someone.

Ask which situations the clinic considers revision, in plain words, and which it does not.

Who Decides

Ask who assesses whether a revision is indicated, and whether a second opinion is possible. Ask whether the assessment can be made from photographs or requires you to travel.

If it requires travel, ask who pays for that. This is the line where most terms stop being generous.

What Is Covered and What Is Not

Surgeon's fee, hospital, anaesthesia, accommodation, flights. Terms commonly cover the first and not the last. That is not unreasonable, but you should know it now rather than later.

If there is a time limit, find out what starts the clock.

If You Would Rather Be Treated at Home

Some people, faced with a revision, prefer a surgeon in the UK. Ask what documentation the clinic would provide to support that, and whether any part of the original fee is refundable in that case.

The honest answer is often no refund, and knowing that in advance is still valuable.

Ask for It Before You Pay

Revision terms requested before payment are a document. Requested afterwards, they are a negotiation.

Every clinic has them. The only question is whether you read them while you still had a choice.

Not treatment advice. Every plan is decided by an examination, not by an article.
