Expectations and Results: The Gap That Causes Most Disappointment
Most unhappiness after surgery is not a complication. It is a mismatch that was visible before the operation. How to close it.
Describe the Problem, Not the Solution
Arriving with a procedure name narrows the conversation before it starts. Describing what bothers you leaves room for the surgeon to tell you what would actually address it.
Sometimes the answer is a different operation. Sometimes it is none.
Photographs of Other People
Bringing images is useful for showing a direction. It is misleading as a target, because the result depends on your anatomy rather than on the image.
Ask the surgeon to tell you which parts of the image are achievable for you and which are not. A straight answer here is a good sign.
Symmetry, and What Is Normal
Faces and bodies are not symmetrical and surgery does not make them so. A surgeon who points out your existing asymmetry before operating is protecting you from noticing it afterwards and blaming the operation.
Have them show you. It is uncomfortable and it is worth it.
The Recovery Is Part of the Result
What you see immediately afterwards is not the outcome, and settling takes time. Ask what the stages look like so that a normal stage is not experienced as a failure.
Ask what would genuinely be a reason to be concerned.
Write Your Expectation Down
One paragraph, in your own words, before the consultation. Read it again afterwards and see whether the plan you were offered matches it.
If it does not, that gap is the conversation to have. Before, not after.
Not treatment advice. Every plan is decided by an examination, not by an article.
