Breast Reduction Abroad: What to Agree Before You Travel
Reduction is a functional operation as much as an aesthetic one. What to agree in writing, and what only an examination can settle.
What You Are Asking For, in Words
Reduction conversations go better when the goal is described rather than sized. Comfort, proportion, what you want to be able to wear or do. A surgeon can work with that; a cup letter is a poor instrument.
Expect the surgeon to translate that into what your tissue allows, and expect the two not to match exactly.
Scars, Sensation and Feeding
These three subjects belong in every reduction consultation. Where the scars will sit, what is known about changes in sensation, and what the operation may mean if you might breastfeed later.
A consultation that covers only the size has covered the least important part.
Documentation to Leave With
The operation note and any histology should be arranged, in writing, before you fly home. Reduction removes tissue and that tissue is usually examined.
If a result arrived after you were back in the UK, someone would have to reach you and explain it.
Follow-Up That Lasts Longer than the Trip
Healing here is measured in months rather than days. Agree who you speak to at home, and what would bring you back.
Find out where the clinic draws the line between a complication and a normal stage, so that you are not deciding that alone at home.
Weight, and Why It Is Asked About
Surgeons frequently ask whether your weight is stable before planning a reduction, because significant change afterwards alters the result. It is a planning question rather than a judgement, and it is worth answering honestly.
If your weight is still moving, expect the recommendation to be to wait. That is advice, and it is the same advice you would receive at home.
Smoking and the Conversation Nobody Enjoys
Smoking affects wound healing, and reduction involves incisions that depend on it. Clinics ask because the answer changes risk, not because they are policing you.
Whatever the clinic requires, it should be stated plainly and with a deadline. A specific answer given before booking is a sign of a surgical practice; silence on the subject is a sign of a sales practice.
Not treatment advice. Every plan is decided by an examination, not by an article.
