Reading Reviews of Clinics Abroad: Signal and Noise
Reviews of medical travel are unusually noisy. What is worth reading, what is worth ignoring, and what to look for instead.
Timing Is the Most Useful Filter
Most reviews are written in the first days, when the experience being described is hospitality: the transfer, the hotel, how kind everyone was. Those are real and they are not the outcome.
Look for anything written months later. There is far less of it and it is worth ten of the others.
Complaints Are More Informative than Praise
Not because they are more honest, but because they are specific. A complaint usually names what went wrong and when, which is the kind of detail praise rarely contains.
Read how the clinic replies. A reply that engages with the detail tells you more than the review did.
Photographs Prove Less than They Appear To
Angle, lighting, posture and swelling change images enormously, and consent for publishing them varies. Before and after galleries are a marketing format rather than evidence.
This applies equally to galleries you like.
What to Look for Instead
Whether the same surgeon's name recurs. Whether aftercare is mentioned at all. Whether anyone describes a plan being changed after examination, and how the clinic handled it.
Those three things describe how a clinic operates. Star ratings do not.
Ask to Speak to Someone
Some clinics can put you in touch with a previous patient. Some clinics arrange it and some cannot for privacy reasons; both answers are informative.
A conversation is worth more than a page of reviews, and it is much harder to fake.
Not treatment advice. Every plan is decided by an examination, not by an article.
